ABOUT THE CONTEST

This summer, author Melba McGee and volunteers from Carp Creative Writers Group (CCWG), Stittsville Creative Writing Group (SCWG), and West Carleton Writers (WCW) are hosting the "Summer Wonderings" Young Writers Anthology Contest. The contest will be accepting submissions from June 21 to September 21, 2021. The contest is open to young writers who:

  • Reside and or attend school in Carp, Stittsville, or West Carleton.

  • Attend school in grades 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, or 12.

OUR GOAL

Our goal for this contest is to inspire creativity in local youth and set a foundation in the arts for the next generation of writers. As a retired teacher, our contest's founder believes that more opportunities should be created for young people to share their writing and be recognized for their talents.

WHAT WE'RE LOOKING FOR

From June 21 to September 21, 2021, we will be accepting submissions from young writers who attend schools in grades 7-12. Submitted pieces must be fiction, story or poem; and incorporate the theme of "Summer Wonderings" (which is up to the interpretation of each writer).

HOW IT WORKS

Submissions are to be sent via postal mail to address found on CONTACT page. The name of the writer must ONLY be present on Submission Form (never on submitted pages of the narrative). Once received, submissions will be separated into three categories: grades 7&8, 9&10, and 11&12, then sent (minus the Submission Form) to be reviewed by a team of judges. The person who sorts and separates the submissions and Submission Forms (Melba McGee) is NOT one of the judges. Once the winning pieces are determined (by finding the average of marks assigned by all judges), winners will then be notified via email.

The Submission Form can be found on the SUBMISSION GUIDELINES page.

WHAT YOU'LL GET

The prize is having your writing published in an anthology book, which:

  • Will be awarded free to each winner.

  • Will be available for sale on Amazon.ca.

  • Will be donated to each library in Carp, Stittsville, and West Carleton.
